According to the Houston Chronicle the Battle of Palo Alto on May 1846 marked the end of the Mexican American war. American soldiers took Mexico city and forced the resignation of President Santa Anna. This marked the end of the Mexican American war. We signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which stated we had complete control over Texas and made the Rio Grande our official border. To compensate we paid half the amount we had originally offered of $18,250,000 (Smith (1919) p. 241). Though this stirred controversy it at least ended the war.

Along with gaining Texas and the Rio Grande Border we also gained California, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming and Colorado. Mexicans in those states had the right to safely return to Mexico or gain citizenship within the U.S. A win like this was an enormous achievement for such a young country like the United States.
